Choghadiya divides the time from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts, and sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. Each part is roughly an hour and a half.

Each period carries a name, Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Kaal or Rog. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are traditionally favourable; Char is considered suitable for travel; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are usually avoided for new beginnings.

Because periods are measured from local sunrise and sunset, they change with the city and the season.
